Save the Southern Sea

Save the Southern Sea

If your super fund is invested in oil and gas, it might support seismic blasting. Join the fight to stop seismic blasting!

What is seismic blasting?

Seismic blasting is the damaging first step in the search for fossil fuels and involves multiple airguns firing every 10 to 15 seconds, all day, every day, for weeks to months on end. The noise generated by seismic airguns under water reaches a massive 250 decibels which is 1,000,000 times more intense than the loudest whale sounds! The blasts kill zooplankton over a kilometre away, and damage the sensory organs of marine animals, especially whales and dolphins that rely on hearing for survival.

The multinational corporation TGS wants to blast an enormous 5.5 million hectares of ocean, its inhabitants and natural beauty – an area extending from Tasmania, along Victoria’s coastline, and all the way to South Australia.

Join us, Ben and Jerry’s and Surfrider in our fight to stop seismic blasting!

The oceans need you

Join the fight to protect the ocean, ecosystems and community threatened by TGS’s seismic blasting proposal. We are strongly opposed to investing and searching for more fossil fuels in the Southern Sea and the expansion of the fossil fuel industry as a whole. In 2023, we are facing climate catastrophe and simply do not need more oil and gas.

We call for the permanent protection of Australia’s south-eastern waters from fossil fuel exploration, and demand an immediate end to the proposed expansion of the offshore fossil fuel industry.

We all have a part to play in protecting our marine life. Take action today!

The issue

TGS has applied to blast the region for 400 days. This damaging plan puts unique and globally significant areas under threat, including the iconic 12 Apostles, King Island and the Great Southern Reef. The blasting proposal includes the Bonney Upwelling and other Marine Protected Areas for blue whales, southern right whales, and their calves. On top of this, the area is exposed to some of the biggest swells on the planet – straight from the Southern Ocean. Larger swells mean that blasting in this area is especially dangerous as they vastly increase the risk of a devastating oil spill, threatening Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and even NSW.

Impact to marine life

Seismic blasting can kill or injure marine animals close by – even tiny zooplankton more than a kilometre away. Seismic blasts can damage the hearing of marine animals, like whales and dolphins, that rely on sound to navigate and communicate over vast distances, as well as scaring them away from key feeding and breeding grounds.

TGS wants to blast critical habitat for whales, including protected sanctuaries for blue whales, southern right whales, and their calves. The proposed blasting area threatens both the offshore and coastal environment and includes two Commonwealth Marine Parks, containing globally significant values, and rare and unique species.

Impact to communities

The Great Southern Reef contributes more than $10 billion per year to Australia’s economy. Seismic blasting directly impacts the reef ecosystem and the fishing industries that rely on it, putting livelihoods at risk.
